How to Fix Error - Attempting to restore system image to new HDD, getting error message no matter what approach I use.?

Attempting to restore system image to new HDD, getting error message no matter what approach I use.

Hello.
My internal Hard drive recently crashed, so I've replaced it with a new one of identical specs.
I then tried to restore my computer onto the new HDD, from a System Image I had created on an external hard drive.
In every attempt to do so, I failed.
First, I attempted to restore the System Image without having installed windows 7 onto the new HDD.
This did not work.
Then, I tried again after installing windows 7 onto the new drive:
- I tried to restore from the system image by going the control pannel, and once I got into the repair program I was told that I need to do this process using the Repair Disk, or windows install disk 7
- So I booted from the Windows install disk, and tried again to restore from the system image located on my external hard drive.
I received an error message telling me that the "System Image Restore failed" because "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found."
Here's the thing, up to this point it has had no problem seeing the new HDD.
It even gave me the option to exclude the new HDD.
I did not exclude it.
In the error message "details," it recommended that I type "LIST DISK" command into "DISKPART command interpreter."
I check it and my new HDD shows up ad disk 0.
As I already said, I didn't chose to exclude the disk.
It suggested that a USB disk may have been assigned as a system disk, but I have no USB disks attached, other than the one with the System image on it.
Earlier in the process I was assured that that External Hard Drive was being excluded, due
to it having the System image on it.
I even double checked in the command prompt that the new HDD was being seen as the system disk.
It is.
Finally it says that an Invalid disk may have been assigned as the system disk.
If this is the case I do not know why the new HDD would be invalid.
The only information I've learned so far from the forum is that the new HDD must be as big as the old one.
MY new HDD is as big as the old one.
Please, help me figure out what is wrong.
I don't have any way of removing the information from my old HDD, my only option is to use the system disk.

P.S, If it turns out that I am unable to restore my system onto a new HDD using system image, then the person responsable for the program should feel bad about themselves, as they are a bad person.

The native image restore facility is very basic and also quite temperamental.
Microsoft did a lousy job when it released it for Windows 7.
I have stopped using it in favour of Acronis True Image which costs money but is a fully featured and reliable product.
About your current problem: From other posts on the same subject I gather that it is most likely caused by your new disk being slightly smaller than the old disk.
A difference of a few bytes is lethal.
Products like TrueImage take this in their stride but
Windows image restore cannot cope with it.
I cannot guarantee that a larger disk will work but it probably will.
If so then you should put the current disk in a USB case and use it from now on for your regular weekly backups.

In this method we will try to Boot in Safe mode with Networking and see if the error still persists.

  • Search "MSCONFIG" and Open.
  • Click on Boot Tab
  • Tick Safe Boot in Boot Option
  • Select Network.
  • Click Apply and OK.
  • Reboot your System.
