I have a Word document with modified heading styles.  When I type a heading, then click to apply the Heading 1 style it applies my custom style that I've previously created.  If I click undo (to unapply the style to the single heading), Word automatically
modfies the Heading 1 style back to the default Word 2010 Heading 1 style (thus I lose my custom style and all of my Heading 1's revert to the original Word 2010 Heading 1 style). 
 
Automatically update document styles is NOT selected under the Templates and Add-ins box.  I have no idea why this is happening.  If I click redo after clicking undo, the Heading 1 style still doesn't change back to my custom Heading 1 style.

I got the same problem and found the solution!

I think it is a bug in the system.

How to reset it:
Open the (template) file.
Go to: Change styles> style sets > reset document quick styles
See if the problem still occurs.
Save the (template) file.

This worked for me.
I only had this problem in 1 of the 6 template files I made this week.
Now it is working fine again.

If you failed to fix it, another option is to call Microsoft and walk through the process with a technician. To do this, dial "1-800-936-5700". Explain the error that you received and the steps in the update process during which it was displayed. The technician will be able to walk through the steps from getting a new product key to finishing the installation.
